Why Thanksgiving Travellers Are Heading to Honolulu, Hawaii for November Surf

Honolulu is ready to welcome travellers looking for sun, sea and a very different kind of Thanksgiving break. While many parts of the mainland United States turn cold in November, Honolulu stays warm. The city offers blue skies, soft beaches, lively streets and a chance to watch some of the world’s strongest waves.
November is a special month on Oʻahu. It brings the start of the winter surf season on the famous North Shore. It also brings holiday travellers from across the mainland. Families, couples, surfers and beach lovers fly in for Thanksgiving. They come for a warm escape, but they also come to see a huge sporting show created by nature.
Honolulu gives visitors two very different holiday experiences on one island. Waikīkī offers calm city energy, hotels, restaurants and beginner-friendly surf lessons. The North Shore offers giant winter waves, famous surfing beaches and a raw view of the Pacific Ocean.

Winter waves change the North Shore

The winter surf season in Hawaiʻi starts in November and continues into April. Strong storms far north in the Pacific Ocean send long waves towards Oʻahu. These waves hit the North Shore and west-facing beaches with great power.
Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and ʻEhukai Beach, home of the Banzai Pipeline, become major places to watch surfing. The waves can be very large. At times, they may rise to 30 feet or more. For visitors, this is an exciting sight. For experienced surfers, it is a serious test.
The North Shore is not a normal swimming beach in high surf. The water can be fast, deep and dangerous. Strong currents, hard shorebreak and hidden reefs can create major risks. State ocean-safety guidance says inexperienced swimmers and surfers should stay out of the water when high-surf conditions are in place.
This does not mean visitors should avoid the North Shore. It means they should enjoy it in the right way. They can stand on the sand, watch the waves, listen to lifeguards and see world-class athletes in action. The surf itself becomes the attraction.

A new November competition season

The North Shore’s 2026 competition season has started early. The HTA Sunset Pro opened at Sunset Beach in late October and continues into early November. The event brings talented surfers from Hawaiʻi and French Polynesia to one of the island’s most respected surf breaks.
The HTA Haleʻiwa Pro follows from 5 to 14 November at Haleʻiwa Aliʻi Beach Park. This adds another reason for visitors to make the journey from Honolulu to the North Shore. The event offers a close view of rising surf talent and the culture that surrounds the sport.
The main Pipeline competition is planned later in the season, from late January into February 2027. This means November is the beginning of the North Shore story, not its final chapter. The season starts with energy, smaller early swells in some periods and the promise of bigger waves ahead.
Visitors should remember that surf events depend on ocean conditions. Competition days can change if the waves are too small, too large or unsafe. A good trip plan should allow time for flexibility.

Thanksgiving travellers choose Honolulu

Thanksgiving falls on 26 November in 2026. Honolulu is well placed for travellers from the mainland who want a holiday without an international border crossing. It offers a tropical break while still being part of the United States.
The appeal is simple. People can leave cold weather behind and arrive in a place with warm air, beaches and outdoor dining. They can spend Thanksgiving near the ocean, walk around Waikīkī, visit Pearl Harbor, explore local food and take a day trip to the North Shore.
Recent visitor figures show how important November is for Hawaiʻi. In November 2025, more than 736,000 visitors came to the islands. Most arrived by air. Travellers from the US West formed the largest market, while travellers from the US East also made a strong contribution.
Oʻahu welcomed nearly 426,000 visitors during that month. Visitor spending on the island rose strongly, showing that people were staying longer and spending more during their trips. Honolulu remains the main gateway for this demand because Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is the state’s largest airport.

Flights keep the mainland connected

Honolulu has direct flights from many important mainland cities. These include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Atlanta and New York-area airports. This makes a short holiday escape possible for travellers from both the west and east of the country.
In November 2025, Hawaiʻi had more than 3,900 nonstop domestic flights from the continental United States. These flights provided more than 838,000 seats. The US West remained the largest air market, but service from eastern cities also grew.
For 2026, airline schedules are still subject to change. Travellers should check their flight plans early. This is especially important for Thanksgiving week, when many people travel at the same time.

Airport crowds will be part of the journey

Holiday travel brings excitement, but it also brings crowds. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times at Honolulu airport. The day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after the holiday are usually the busiest days.
Travellers should reach the airport early. For mainland and international flights, passengers should aim to arrive at least two hours before departure. Parking can fill quickly. Using a drop-off service, public transport or the Skyline rail system may help visitors avoid stress.
Honolulu offers more than a beach holiday in November. It brings together strong ocean drama, sports, warm weather and a major holiday travel season. For mainland visitors, the city is a place where Thanksgiving can begin with a flight over the Pacific and end with giant waves rolling onto the North Shore.
