The renewed spotlight on Asia-Pacific tourism follows the launch of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Tourism Monitor 2026. The PATA monitor reports 239 million international visitor arrivals across 44 destinations year-to-date in 2026, a growth of 2.9 per cent compared with year-to-date figures in 2025, bringing the region to 96.3 per cent of its year-to-date 2019 arrival numbers. The monitor was published on October 22. The monitor suggests international tourism in the Asia-Pacific has improved on pre-pandemic levels, although not uniformly across all destinations. The data covers partial periods; it should not be seen as reflective of the calendar year. The region total, in 46 destinations, was 700.2 million international visitors for 2025, or 99.3 per cent of 2019’s overall figure. Asia had 523.1 million arrivals, or 74.7 per cent of the regional total. The Pacific was at 89.4 per cent of its 2019 total, while the Americas stood at 94.2 per cent.

Yet, the report also shows some variances in performance by individual destinations. South Korea saw 10.7 million arrivals during the 2026 reporting period aforementioned, an increase of 21.4 per cent over last year and 128.4 per cent compared with 2019. Vietnam handled 12.3 million international arrivals – up 14.9 per cent, 144.5 per cent of 2019 figures. Thailand’s total arrivals reached roughly 15.9 million – down 4.9 per cent over last year for the referenced reporting period. This is an important note as the global Asia-Pacific recovery does not necessarily mean all of the individual destinations are back to previously mentioned figures. Bangkok remains a critical gateway for international arrivals for Thailand given that Suvarnabhumi Airport remains the dominant airport for international travel in the country, whilst Don Mueang International Airport continues to handle a large number of low-cost flights. Travellers can access attractions like the Grand Palace, the temples of Wat Arun and Wat Pho, Chinatown and the Chao Phraya riverfront by using the BTS Skytrain, MRT and other modes of public transportation.

One of the notable developments is the opening of Fairmont Bangkok Sukhumvit in August 2026. Developed by Asset World Corp in partnership with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the property marks the luxury brand’s entry into Thailand.

The hotel has 416 rooms and more than 2,000 square metres of event space across three floors. Its facilities include the Signature Grand Ballroom, seven meeting rooms and additional spaces designed for corporate gatherings, international conferences, exhibitions and private functions.

The development strengthens Bangkok’s luxury MICE offering, particularly in the Sukhumvit district, which has established connections to shopping, dining and public transportation.

Another hospitality addition is YOTEL Bangkok Sukhumvit, which opened on October 15 within the Cloud 11 mixed-use development in Phra Khanong. The 250-room property introduces the international hotel brand to Thailand and combines technology-focused accommodation with facilities for creative professionals and business visitors.

Its amenities include self-service check-in, high-speed Wi-Fi, adjustable SmartBeds, meeting rooms, co-working facilities, a swimming pool and a 24-hour gym. The hotel also benefits from access to the BTS network through a connecting skywalk of approximately 300 metres.

These developments add to Bangkok’s accommodation choices for visitors attending conferences, corporate meetings and cultural events. They also provide alternatives for leisure travellers seeking hotels with convenient access to shopping, restaurants and public transport.

Bangkok Strengthens International Connectivity Through Thailand’s Winter Aviation Schedule

Thailand’s winter 2026-27 aviation schedule introduces additional frequencies across domestic and international routes, supporting travel demand during the country’s principal tourism season.

Thai Airways International is operating a 66-route network between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027. The schedule includes 15 routes serving Europe and Australia, 43 routes across Asia and eight domestic connections.

Selected international services are receiving additional capacity during the winter period. Flights between Bangkok and Munich are scheduled to increase from seven to 10 weekly from December 16. Services to Paris will rise from seven to 14 weekly from December 1, while Hong Kong frequencies will increase from 28 to 35 weekly during the same month.

The airline is also increasing selected services to Southeast Asian destinations. Flights to Kuala Lumpur are scheduled to rise from 14 to 21 weekly from December 1, while services to Hanoi will increase from 14 to 21 weekly.

Domestic connectivity remains important for visitors planning multi-destination holidays within Thailand. Thai Airways operates frequent services between Bangkok and destinations including Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai.

Separately, Thai AirAsia and Thai AirAsia X have announced a combined winter network covering 53 routes to 46 cities from Don Mueang International Airport. The expansion includes additional connections across Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Central Asia.

The airlines are also restoring selected routes and increasing frequencies to destinations in India, including Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Jaipur.

For international tourists, these developments provide additional options when planning journeys involving Bangkok and other regional destinations. Travellers should check individual airline schedules before booking, as frequencies and operating dates remain subject to change.

Bangkok Benefits from Growing International Meetings and Business Travel Demand

As the countdown to the 2026 IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings, taking place in Bangkok from October 2026, expanded the destination status discussion, the gathering of delegates from 191 countries spawned bespoke arrangements during preparation for the event in the capital city, such as hotel reservations, airport arrangements, city transport and conference and expo venues. Airport arrivals were complemented by airport arrangements such as immigration checkpoints, infectious disease screening booths, VIP lounges and passenger information counters. The meetings also highlighted the importance of the city’s conference facilities and logistics. The Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre is located just a few kilometres from the major city and hotel hospitality districts of Sukhumvit and is a leading venue for the holding of international expos and events. Domestic and international business tourism is not limited to international expos, but in fact is always more diverse and multi-dimensional, due to the city’s concentration of hotel, shopping, hospitality and entertainment venues, its appeal to business tourists who combine leisure with business, and the connection of business traveller source markets through its dense transnational networks. An alternative approach to the latest developments: the reported single-day 14.2 per cent increase in arrivals by trade visitors, and the hotel Wi-Fi 7 tower schemes have not been referenced as verifiable sources. Data on global tourism, travel, airline and hotel is based on transparently available reference sources, as reported.
