From Submarines to Catamarans Changing Adventure Travel Definition as Blue Safari Promotes Mauritius’ Marine Experiences

From submarines to catamarans, Blue Safari is changing adventure travel as it promotes Mauritius’ marine experiences, offering travellers a fresh way to explore the ocean, discover marine life, and seek thrills.

From submarines to catamarans, Blue Safari is changing the definition of adventure travel with a striking portfolio of Mauritius’ marine experiences. The company is taking its underwater and ocean-based offerings to India’s travel trade, where demand for distinctive holidays continues to attract attention.

Speaking at the Mauritius Tourism Roadshow in Kolkata, Dawood Jawahir, Marketing and Commercial Director at Blue Safari, highlighted a real submarine that takes guests to 35 metres underwater during a two-hour excursion. Meanwhile, catamaran cruises, island visits, dolphin experiences, snorkelling and fishing broaden the adventure proposition. For travellers, Mauritius is becoming far more than a beach escape.

Blue Safari is positioning underwater exploration, catamaran cruises and fishing excursions as key experiences for visitors to Mauritius, with India emerging as one of its most important source markets.

Speaking during the Mauritius Tourism Roadshow in Kolkata, Dawood Jawahir, Marketing and Commercial Director at Blue Safari, described the company as a distinctive marine-experience operator offering a real submarine excursion that takes visitors to a depth of up to 35 metres.

According to Jawahir, the submarine experience lasts approximately two hours, combining the underwater journey with a safety briefing, registration, transfer to the surface boat and an exploration of marine life.

The company is also targeting Indian travel partners as demand grows for new and memorable experiences that can be incorporated into Mauritius holiday packages.

Jawahir explained that visitors first arrive at the company’s office for a safety briefing and registration. Once the initial procedures are completed, guests are transferred by boat to the surface vessel from where the submarine is accessed.

Guests enter the submarine individually under the supervision of the pilot, according to the interview.

Inside, travellers have a view through the submarine’s port windows while the pilot serves as both operator and guide. Jawahir said the pilot provides information about the submarine as well as the marine life encountered during the excursion.

The experience allows visitors to observe the underwater environment from inside a real submarine, with the vessel reaching a maximum depth of 35 metres.

Jawahir particularly highlighted the direct views of the marine environment and described the experience as something travellers need to experience themselves in Mauritius.

India is a major market for Blue Safari

India has become a particularly important market for Blue Safari.

During the Kolkata roadshow interview, Jawahir said the Indian market represents almost 50% of Blue Safari’s guests.

“India is a very important market for Mauritius especially for Blue Safari,” he said, while inviting Indian travel partners and travellers to build closer collaboration with the company.

The emphasis on India comes as travel businesses increasingly look for experiences that can make holiday packages more distinctive. For Blue Safari, the submarine excursion provides a product that goes beyond traditional sightseeing and beach-based activities.

Jawahir said the response from travel professionals at the Kolkata roadshow had been encouraging.

He observed that many participants were looking for new experiences and new things to do for their guests, particularly experiences that could help create memorable packages.

For the company, that interest provides an opportunity to work more closely with India’s travel trade and introduce its range of marine activities to a broader audience.

Catamaran cruises expand the experience portfolio

Blue Safari’s offering extends beyond the submarine.

Jawahir explained that the company operates a fleet of catamarans, providing excursions across different parts of Mauritius.

The company’s activities include island cruises, with visitors able to reach islands by catamaran. The company also offers speedboat options for island visits, according to Jawahir.

Another part of the portfolio is its western cruise programme, which includes dolphin-related excursions and island visits. Depending on the excursion, activities mentioned during the interview include unlimited drinks, barbecue, dolphin encounters and snorkelling.

Blue Safari’s catamaran fleet covers the north, west and east parts of Mauritius, giving travel partners several options when building marine-focused itineraries.

This range is important for tour operators because it allows them to combine different experiences rather than relying on a single excursion.

Big-game fishing adds another marine attraction

Fishing is another component of Blue Safari’s activities.

Jawahir said the company offers big-game fishing excursions, with customers able to choose between half-day and full-day fishing trips.

The fishing product complements the company’s submarine, catamaran, speedboat and other sea-based activities, giving travellers different ways to experience the waters around Mauritius.

Rather than presenting itself solely as a submarine operator, Blue Safari is therefore developing a broader portfolio of marine excursions that can cater to different traveller interests.

Jawahir directed travel partners and consumers seeking more information about the company’s sea activities to the Blue Safari website.

European, Middle Eastern and African markets remain important

While India is a major market, Blue Safari is not dependent on a single source market.

Jawahir identified Middle Eastern, Indian, European and African clients among the company’s key market segments.

He also explained that demand changes according to the season, meaning different source markets become more prominent at different times of the year.

Among European markets, he specifically mentioned France, Italy, England and Germany, describing them as markets that contribute throughout the year.

The company therefore adapts its approach according to the season and the markets generating demand.

For Mauritius, this creates an opportunity to maintain visitor flows across different periods of the year by engaging with multiple international markets.

May to July highlighted as India’s high season

For the Indian market specifically, Jawahir identified May to July as the high season for Mauritius.

However, he also pointed to changing travel patterns among honeymoon couples.

According to Jawahir, honeymoon travellers now travel throughout much of the year, apart from certain periods that he referenced during the interview.

That year-round honeymoon demand could give marine-experience operators additional opportunities outside the traditional peak period for Indian visitors.

For travel advisers and tour operators, the distinction is significant: while May to July was identified as the high season for the Indian market, specific traveller segments may continue travelling at other times.

Kolkata roadshow creates trade opportunity

The Kolkata Tourism Roadshow gave Blue Safari an opportunity to engage directly with Indian travel professionals.

Jawahir said he was impressed by the interest among participants, particularly their desire to discover new types of experiences and activities that could be incorporated into holiday packages.

His message to Indian travel partners was straightforward: collaboration can help create more distinctive Mauritius itineraries.

The company is encouraging partners to engage with Blue Safari directly and also pointed them towards the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) for additional information.

The roadshow therefore served not only as a promotional platform but also as a trade-facing opportunity to discuss how marine experiences can be integrated into Mauritius travel products.

Mauritius seeks experiences beyond conventional holidays

The Blue Safari presentation reflects a broader travel trend towards experience-led tourism, where visitors increasingly seek activities that become a central part of their holiday rather than simply filling time between sightseeing stops.

In Blue Safari’s case, the combination of a 35-metre submarine excursion, catamaran cruises, island visits, dolphin-related activities, snorkelling and fishing gives travel partners multiple products to consider when developing Mauritius itineraries.

For the Indian market, the opportunity appears particularly significant given Jawahir’s statement that Indian visitors account for almost half of Blue Safari’s guests.

The submarine remains the company’s standout experience. Its two-hour programme offers travellers the opportunity to descend to 35 metres and observe marine life from inside the vessel, while the pilot provides information throughout the journey.

As Indian travellers and travel companies continue to seek differentiated holiday experiences, Blue Safari is using the Mauritius Tourism Roadshow to strengthen its connection with the country’s travel trade.

“Blue Safari demonstrates how Mauritius can transform a conventional island holiday into an experience-led adventure. From submarines exploring the underwater world to catamarans cruising across its waters, these marine experiences add depth, excitement and memorable moments to the destination. The strong interest from the Indian travel market is particularly significant because Indian travellers increasingly seek distinctive experiences that can make their holidays more meaningful and shareable. Blue Safari’s presence at the Kolkata roadshow also shows the importance of direct engagement with travel partners. Mauritius already has powerful natural appeal; experiences such as these can give visitors compelling new reasons to explore beyond the traditional beach itinerary and discover another dimension of the island.” says Anup Kumar Keshan, Editior-in-Chief, TTW

For Jawahir, the objective is clear: encourage Indian partners to look beyond conventional Mauritius holiday products and consider marine experiences that can make itineraries more memorable.

For more information about Blue Safari’s sea activities and excursions, travellers and travel partners can visit the company’s website or contact the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority for tourism-related information.

The cause is clear: travellers increasingly want memorable experiences rather than conventional sightseeing alone. The answer is Blue Safari’s expanding portfolio of marine adventures in Mauritius. Its real submarine takes guests to 35 metres underwater, while catamarans offer opportunities to explore different parts of the island. Dolphin-related excursions, island visits, snorkelling and fishing further diversify the offering. The reason this matters is equally straightforward: distinctive activities can strengthen destination appeal and give travel advisers more options when building holiday packages. India is especially important for Blue Safari, with Jawahir saying Indian guests represent almost 50% of its welcoming guests. This makes the Indian travel market strategically significant.

Blue Safari is putting a new spin on adventure travel in Mauritius, moving beyond the familiar beach holiday with submarines, catamarans and other marine experiences. Its 35-metre submarine offers a two-hour underwater excursion, while its wider portfolio includes island cruises, speedboat trips, dolphin-related activities, snorkelling and big-game fishing. The company’s message to the Indian travel trade is equally important. India represents almost 50% of Blue Safari’s guests, according to Dawood Jawahir, making Indian travellers and travel partners a major part of its international strategy. The Kolkata roadshow highlighted strong interest in new experiences that can help create memorable packages. Consequently, Blue Safari’s approach reflects a broader shift towards experience-led tourism. Rather than simply visiting Mauritius, travellers can explore its waters, encounter marine life and build more activity-focused itineraries. This combination gives Mauritius another powerful reason to capture attention among adventure-seeking travellers.
