Mauritius opens on 1 November 2026, when Emirates is set to operate the airline’s new-generation Airbus A350 on the daily Dubai-Mauritius route, even as the government unveils a long-term tourism strategy for the island’s hospitality and visitor economy. The new aircraft and the broad-based tourism plan will knit Port Louis and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport into the global international aviation network out of Dubai, and introduce more premium economy options for those travelling to the island from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In the meantime, the Mauritian government is preparing a tourism strategy focused on destination branding, accommodation, sustainability, skills training, and opportunities for local participation in the economy. Official tourism figures indicate that 668,471 visitors visited the island in the first six months of 2026 – a 1.5% higher number than the same period in 2025.

Emirates Introduces Airbus A350 on Daily Dubai–Mauritius Route

Emirates begins operating its Airbus A350-900 on the Dubai–Mauritius route from 1 November, replacing the Boeing 777 previously assigned to its daily EK709 and EK710 services.

The aircraft introduces a three-class configuration with 298 seats, comprising 32 Business Class seats, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy Class seats. The deployment brings Emirates’ latest Business Class product to the route, alongside its Premium Economy offering.

The announced flight schedule is:

EK710 Mauritius–Dubai 18:30 01:10 (+1)

The A350 Business Class cabin features a 1-2-1 seating configuration, providing direct aisle access. Its fully flat seats include 20-inch 4K entertainment screens, wireless charging and personal mini-bars.

Premium Economy offers a 2-3-2 arrangement, 19.5-inch-wide seats, adjustable headrests, footrests and 13.3-inch entertainment screens. Economy passengers receive adjustable leather headrests, personal entertainment screens and device-charging facilities.

The aircraft change affects one of Emirates’ three daily Mauritius services. The other two flights, EK703/704 and EK701/702, continue operating with Airbus A380 aircraft.

Together, the three daily services provide 21 weekly flights between Dubai and Mauritius. Through Dubai, passengers can connect to more than 70 destinations across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

For visitors from India, the additional aircraft option strengthens access through Dubai, particularly for travellers planning premium holidays, family trips, honeymoon packages and longer Indian Ocean itineraries.

Mauritius Records 668,471 Tourist Arrivals in First Half of 2026

The Emirates aircraft deployment comes as Mauritius records growth in international visitor numbers during the first six months of 2026.

According to Statistics Mauritius, tourist arrivals increased from 658,909 in January–June 2025 to 668,471 during the corresponding period in 2026, representing annual growth of 1.5%.

Air travel continued to dominate visitor access, accounting for 645,140 arrivals, compared with 23,331 visitors arriving by sea.

The island’s leading source markets during the first half of 2026 included:

Source market Arrivals Annual change
France 153,048 +0.8%
Réunion 66,459 -0.6%
Germany 60,227 +13.4%
United Kingdom 59,954 -16.0%
South Africa 51,858 +7.1%
India 41,966 +11.9%

Germany recorded particularly strong growth, while India remained an important source market, with arrivals increasing by 11.9%.

For Indian travel operators, the figures underline Mauritius’s continuing relevance in long-haul leisure tourism. Its beach resorts, water-based activities, cultural attractions and established hospitality infrastructure support demand for packaged holidays and independent travel.

Mauritius Prepares Tourism Strategy for 2026–2035

Mauritius is also preparing a broader framework for the next decade of tourism development.

Following the submission of the World Bank’s Ten-Year Blueprint for the Tourism Sector 2026–2035 in April 2026, the Ministry of Tourism announced on 30 October that it would prepare a strategy paper and accompanying action plan.

The proposed framework identifies seven strategic pillars:

  • Destination marketing and international promotion.
  • Diversification of tourism products.
  • Management of accommodation capacity.
  • Institutional review and strengthening.
  • Addressing workforce skills shortages.
  • Sustainable tourism development.
  • Strengthening local economic participation and supply chains.

These priorities cover several areas of the island’s visitor economy, including resort development, destination management, tourism employment and the distribution of economic benefits across local communities.

For accommodation operators, the strategy’s focus on managing tourism capacity is particularly relevant as Mauritius balances international visitor demand with environmental protection and infrastructure requirements.

The sustainability component also places greater emphasis on developing tourism without compromising the island’s coastal ecosystems, marine environments and natural attractions.

The government has not yet published a complete operational timetable for every initiative under the proposed action plan.

Digital Nomad Tourism and Premium Visas: What Travellers Need to Know

Mauritius already operates a Premium Visa programme designed for eligible international visitors who wish to stay for extended periods while working remotely for overseas businesses.

The visa allows qualifying foreign nationals to stay for up to one year and is renewable. It is free of charge and is intended for tourists, retirees and remote professionals travelling with their families.

Applicants must satisfy the programme’s eligibility and documentation requirements, including evidence of accommodation, sufficient financial resources and appropriate medical and travel insurance.

The scheme provides an established route for international professionals seeking longer stays in Mauritius. However, claims that a new automated immigration registration system has reduced approvals to 24 hours could not be independently verified and should not be treated as an officially confirmed policy change.

For longer-stay visitors, the distinction between visa eligibility, application processing and immigration approval remains important when arranging accommodation and travel.

Airport Operations and MICE Infrastructure Remain Important Development Priorities

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, just outside of Plaine Magnien, remains the main international aviation gateway to Mauritius. The airport’s connectivity is strategically central to the island’s tourism economic value, especially to travellers arriving from Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and the Indian Ocean. The published flight information system at the airport offers arrival and departure updates, although airline schedules are subject to operational adjustments, and a new real-time flight-trajectory optimisation programme at Port Louis airport was not able to be corroborated independently. Published aeronautical information at the airport does not corroborate the reported deployment of a new airport-wide air traffic flow management system. An additional market segment to explore is the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector. Mauritius already has a range of hotels and convention facilities ready to facilitate corporate events, incentive programmes, exhibitions and international events. No upgrade to the island’s airport conference and meeting capabilities was reported, nor has the operation of the convention venues has been officially noted. The real-time certification of five convention venues under a newly introduced sustainable-event standard could not be independently confirmed in a government announcement, suggesting the programme is yet to commence. The government’s upcoming tourism master plan signals a credible lens through which to consider future investments in destination infrastructure, sustainable accommodation, new tourism sources and new industries.
