SOMOS Introduces Bean Pouches Made With Beef Tallow



SOMOS is introducing shelf-stable bean pouches formulated with 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow, highlighting a traditional cooking fat used in Mexican cuisine. The product combines pinto or black beans with beef tallow, sea salt, onion powder, yeast extract and garlic powder in a short ingredient list positioned as seed oil–free.

Each pouch delivers 17g of protein and 17g of fiber. The use of beef tallow reflects growing interest in traditional fats and seed oil alternatives, as well as animal-based ingredients associated with regenerative and grass-fed sourcing.

For product developers, the formulation illustrates how animal fats can be incorporated into plant-forward products to add flavor while maintaining a relatively simple ingredient deck. The use of tallow also differentiates the product within the ready-to-eat bean category, which typically relies on vegetable oils.

The product is rolling out at Whole Foods Market, with additional retail distribution planned later this year.
