Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is marking significant milestones with the anniversaries of Muscat and Salalah airports, both of which have played pivotal roles in transforming the nation’s aviation landscape. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and alignment with global aviation standards, these airports have bolstered Oman’s position as a leading regional hub. The CAA’s celebrations not only honor past achievements but also emphasize the ongoing commitment to expanding the country’s aviation sector, ensuring sustained growth and competitiveness in the global market.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Oman has marked two significant milestones in the country’s aviation history with the 7th anniversary of Muscat International Airport and the 10th anniversary of Salalah Airport. These celebrations highlight the critical role these airports play in shaping Oman’s air transport infrastructure and the broader regional connectivity.

Muscat International Airport, the capital city’s main gateway, was officially opened on November 11, 2018. Since then, it has become an essential hub in Oman’s national air transport network. The airport’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technology have placed it at the forefront of the aviation industry. With a focus on providing modern, safe, and efficient services, Muscat International Airport has aligned itself with global aviation standards, facilitating seamless travel for millions of passengers every year.

As of October 2025, Muscat International has seen remarkable growth in passenger traffic. Over 1.06 million passengers passed through the airport during the month, a 12% increase compared to the same month in 2024, when the airport registered 955,000 passengers. The airport has also maintained a consistent flight operation schedule, handling approximately 8,000 flights during October 2025, showcasing its capacity to manage high volumes of air traffic efficiently. These figures indicate Muscat International’s growing prominence as a regional hub and its increasing importance in Oman’s aviation sector.

One of the key developments at Muscat International Airport in recent years has been the completion of its southern runway project in 2024. This project is of particular significance as it adheres to the specifications set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), enhancing both domestic and international air traffic management. The new runway allows for increased capacity, improved safety, and a more streamlined operational flow, ensuring that the airport remains competitive in an ever-evolving aviation landscape.

In recognition of its achievements, Muscat International Airport received multiple international accolades in 2024. These awards included “The Best Airport in the Middle East” for airports handling between 5 to 15 million passengers annually, “Best Staff in the Middle East,” “Easiest Airport Journey in the Middle East,” and “Cleanest Airport in the Middle East.” These prestigious honors affirm the airport’s dedication to providing exceptional service, creating an efficient and comfortable travel experience, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and customer care.

On the other hand, Salalah Airport, which opened its new terminal building on November 11, 2015, has evolved into a critical airport connecting the Dhofar Governorate with Oman’s other regions and the international travel network. Over the years, Salalah Airport has become a vital hub for regional tourism, especially in the Dhofar region, which is renowned for its unique weather patterns and cultural heritage. The airport’s strategic location supports both tourism and business travel to the region, making it an essential part of Oman’s broader tourism development strategy.

In October 2025, Salalah Airport saw a significant increase in passenger traffic, with a 15% rise compared to the same month in 2024. The airport welcomed over 104,000 passengers in October 2025, up from 91,000 passengers the previous year. This growth in passenger numbers reflects the region’s increasing popularity as a travel destination, particularly during the monsoon season when Dhofar is known for its lush greenery and cooler temperatures, attracting both local and international tourists.

In terms of aircraft traffic, Salalah Airport also experienced an 8% increase in the number of flights during October 2025, further demonstrating its capacity to manage growing demand. The airport’s ongoing development efforts have ensured that it can handle the increasing number of passengers and flights, while continuing to provide efficient and high-quality services.

Salalah Airport’s excellence in service has been recognized internationally as well. Since 2019, the airport has maintained a 5-star rating from Skytrax, a leading global airline and airport rating organization. It has also achieved impressive rankings, such as securing 4th place globally in the category of airports with fewer than two million passengers. These achievements highlight the airport’s ongoing commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

In 2024, Salalah Airport won five prestigious awards, including “The Best Airport in the Middle East” for airports with fewer than two million passengers, as well as “The Easiest Airport Journey,” “Best Staff in the Middle East,” “Cleanest Airport in the Middle East,” and “Most Enjoyable Airport in the Middle East.” These accolades are a testament to the airport’s continued dedication to excellence, creating a positive travel experience for both passengers and airlines.

Both Muscat International Airport and Salalah Airport play vital roles in supporting Oman’s tourism, economic growth, and connectivity with the global aviation network. The airports not only serve as gateways to Oman’s rich cultural and natural heritage but also contribute to the country’s long-term economic diversification goals. Through their world-class infrastructure, top-tier services, and continuous innovation, they position Oman as a key player in the regional aviation industry.

Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority celebrates key milestones for Muscat and Salalah airports, marking their pivotal role in the nation’s aviation evolution. These achievements set the stage for continued growth and global competitiveness in the sector.

As Oman continues to develop its aviation sector in line with the national vision, these airports will remain central to its growth. The ongoing enhancements at Muscat International Airport and Salalah Airport, combined with their global recognition, reflect Oman’s commitment to fostering a competitive, sustainable, and world-class air transport network.
