6 dead in accident at Colorado dairy farm: Fire chief


Six people died in an accident at a dairy farm in Colorado, authorities said.

Fire crews were dispatched to a dairy farm in Weld County on Wednesday evening for a “confined space rescue,” Southeast Weld Fire District Chief Tom Beach said in a statement.

“Crews responded and took appropriate precautions to enter the confined space to perform rescue operations,” Beach said in a statement on Thursday. “Unfortunately, District personnel recovered six deceased individuals from the space.”

No additional details on the incident were released by the Southeast Weld Fire District.

The dairy farm is located in Keenesburg, in a rural area about 45 miles northeast of Denver.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said it is investigating the incident.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office said there is not believed to be any criminal element.

The Dairy Farmers of America said the “tragic accident” occurred at one of its member farms.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts and most sincere condolences go out to the friends and families of the deceased,” the organization said in a statement. “At this early stage, we have no further details.”
