In a strong effort to promote tourism and develop community, the ND Dept. of Commerce has opened six different tourism grants to help restore the state’s historic locations, upgrade infrastructure, and assist local communities. This 69th Assembly sponsored endeavor offers ND towns & cities a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a difference in their cultural heritage to add more visitors and, ultimately stimulate local economies in a targeted, strategic way.
Whether it’s rehabbing historic opera houses or touching up transport systems for tourist attractions as a backdrop as Medora, the grants will help to make North Dakota a better place for people to live as well as visit. While injecting much-needed funding to restore and improve cultural landmarks, the grants are in line with the state’s larger tourism strategy: to maintain its storied past and make it an integral part of the tourism experience for visitors.
These six awards, which represent over $4 million, will leverage economic development in our state by improving the infrastructure of our state’s tourism industry while investing in our historic resources. As the communities of North Dakota emerge out of the difficulties posed by the pandemic, this funding will offer support to bring back to life key landmarks underpinning North Dakota’s tourism industry.
Candle Light Updater/ Historic Opera House Redevelopment Grant: $250,000 for Return of Historic Community Heritage
Most interesting of all is the Historic Opera House Restoration Grant, a prize pool of $250,000 which will be handed out to a successful restoration project restoring any opera house which predates 1930. Those historic buildings, often former centers of community life and entertainment, have in many cases slowly crumbled. With this grant, North Dakota seeks to rehabilitate these important sites so they can continue to play a part in the story of our history and culture for generations to come.
Opera houses are a part of a region’s cultural heritage that must be saved, and restoration can breathe new life into a community who will benefit economically with the influx of visitors who want to see and experience the history of the region. The grant is dedicated to maintaining the historical authenticity and the cultural heritage of these signature buildings so that they can continue thriving as active entertainmentspaces for performances and community. The grant will also make it possible to showcase the work of the past and the present, while providing present and future generations the opportunity to experience these legacy spaces.
Medora Transportation Improvement Grant: $1 million for better access to a National Gem
Another substantial grant, the Medora Transportation Improvement Grant, will provide $1 million towards transportation solutions in Medora, a community that is a hotbed of historical value and home to the ever-popular Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The town is perennially among the park’s top tourist draws that generate revenue, a park known for its scenic landscape, wildlife and connection to U.S. history. But the town’s infrastructure, especially its transportation system, has been unable to keep up with the rise in visitors.
This funding will enable the creation of a community transit service to improving travel to Medora from the surrounding areas, while enhancing the overall experience once visitors arrive in the community. By expanding transportation options, the grant will not only make it more convenient for visitors to access attractions in Medora and the surrounding region, it will also encourage more environmentally responsible tourism by decreasing dependence on private vehicles. This will allow visitors to appreciate to the maximum the unique natural Sardinian landscape and contribute to the growth of local companies and tourism.
Grants for Community Centers: Building Up Rural Areas with $175,000 for Infrastructure
Besides helping historic sites in the state, the Community Hall Grant funding will allocate $175,000 to upgrading rural community halls across North Dakota. These town halls are frequently used as venues for town sports or cultural events. The state can strengthen the social labric of rural communities and promote the places as cultural landscapes for visitors wanting an experience of rural culture and history by investing in these spaces.
The funds will support critical rehabilitation projects including building rehabilitation, accessibility improvements and aesthetic work. In consequence, the rural areas will have the ability to organize cultural events, festivals and other activities appealing to the tourists. In helping to bolster these critical community spaces, North Dakota is not just saving what remains of its rural past but providing a visitor experience that makes its rural legacy come alive.
Historic Theater Restoration and Revitalization Grants: $500,000 towards the Active Cultural Venues
Two other grants — the Historic Theater Restoration Matching Grant and the Historic Theater Improvement Grant — will give help to restore and improve historic theaters in North Dakota. Funded by a total of $750,000 (to be shared among these proposals), grants are intended as a way to maintain theaters that opened up before 1930 and are still in use as theaters now. Many of these theaters have also served as a primary source of entertainment in their communities and are critical contributors to preserving the cultural history of North Dakota.
The resources will aid in the restoration and refurbishment of these areas to keep them in use for future generations to appreciate. As modern-day audiences seek opportunities to enrich their lives through authentic destination experiences, these grants will inspire more visitors interested in arts and cultural tourism to travel to North Dakota.
StateMagazine Grant: $250,000 to showcase the Very Best of North Dakota
A more specific proposal is the State Magazine Grant, which would provide $250,000 to publishers of an official state magazine, current or former. The money will go toward advertising the best tourism products in North Dakota, featuring the state’s natural beauty, cultural attractions and historic sites through beautiful photography and storytelling. The grant will assist in the promotion of publications featuring the state’s tourism-related offerings and will help to promote the image of North Dakota as a premier tourist destination.
Magazines and media in general have always played a significant role in destination promotion. “North Dakota can now put this grant to work enhancing the state’s marketing efforts, so industry professionals and potential visitors alike know that ND has something unique to offer.” This will be a valuable addition to the state’s broad tourism efforts and will help put North Dakota on the map as a place all Americans need to visit to feel the America of our forefathers.
The Role these Grants play in North Dakota’s Tourism Industry
“The 2025 Tourism and Community Enhancement Grants are a large investment in our North Dakota tourism infrastructure and help preserve our culture,” she added. Funding for the restoration of historical sites, the improvement of local transportation systems, and the upgrading of community gathering places will assist competitive efforts to draw visitors to the state.
For tourism to blossom, a destination must have modern amenities and infrastructure but also be connected to its history and culture. And those grants are what enable North Dakota to find that balance, making a visitor experience contemporary with strong pulls of tradition. As we look to better monitor the growing trend of travelers wanting to visit untouched, authentic communities, who are seeking culturally-rich and meaningful experiences, the fact that North Dakota has been putting its emphasis on protecting history alongside improving tourism infrastructure will continue to serve it well in a hyper-competitive world.
Conclusion: The Tourist Appeal of North Dakota
The six North Dakota Department of Commerce tourism grants aren’t so much about saving the past; they are about developing an inclusive future that everyone can visit. “These grants will assist North Dakota in enhancing its infrastructure and state assets that help the rest of the country know that it’s a place to visit,” Senator Hoeven said. As the state increasingly looks at tourism as a critical economic driver, these efforts will help ensure that visitors have rich, meaningful experiences that also foster the growth of local communities and the economy.
