The bigger question concerns the pace combination. Nitish Kumar Reddy was given the new ball in Thiruvananthapuram but struggled for rhythm and conceded 18 runs in an over that included a no-ball. Mohammed Siraj, who was left out of the playing 11, could return in Guwahati.
India could also consider handing a debut to Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi, who was part of the squad for the Sri Lanka Tests. Naman Dhir, meanwhile, bowled five overs in the first ODI but did not get a chance to showcase his batting.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle already underway, India have an opportunity to continue testing their combinations while maintaining their winning momentum.
A must-win contest for visitors
West Indies will need a much-improved all-round performance to prevent India from taking an unassailable 2-0 lead. Justin Greaves provided a major positive in the opening match, scoring 101 off 108 balls for his maiden ODI century and helping the visitors reach 295/7.
West Indies’ batting showed enough competitiveness to put pressure on India, but their inability to defend the total exposed weaknesses in the bowling attack. Fielding was another concern, with missed chances allowing India’s batters to build a decisive partnership.
Shai Hope’s side now face a must-win match in Guwahati. The visitors have not won an ODI series against India since 2002 and will need to break that long-standing run if they are to take the series into a decider.
