World’s Whitest Sand Beaches Revealed in Stunning Global Study
For many Brits, a day spent basking in the sun by the ocean is the ultimate escape from gloomy weather back home. Whether it’s the draw of golden coastlines, vibrant turquoise waters, or simply the embrace of warmer air, beaches offer a timeless sense of relaxation. But what truly defines the “perfect beach”? According to a new study, the answer lies in the pure, pristine whiteness of the sand.
Luxury travel company CV Villas recently conducted an extensive study to uncover the beaches around the world with the whitest sand. The research involved analysing satellite images via Google Maps of approximately 200 beaches across the globe. By comparing the brightness and colour deviation of the sands, the team was able to rank each beach based on just how close it came to dazzling white perfection.
Leading the list is none other than Tulum Beach in Mexico. Located on the eastern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum is a postcard-perfect stretch of coast that borders the crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea. The beach was found to have the closest match to pure white, making it the undisputed champion of white sand beauty.
Tulum is more than just a beautiful beach—it’s a full sensory experience. Framed by towering palm trees and lapped by gentle waves, the coastline here is enhanced by the backdrop of ancient Mayan ruins. One of the standout features is El Castillo, a stone temple perched atop a rugged cliff, watching over the white sands and blue seas. It’s a setting where history and natural splendour combine in dramatic fashion.
The town of Tulum has grown in popularity over recent years, drawing tourists with its eco-chic vibe, boutique hotels, artisanal markets, and vibrant culinary scene. Though it’s a popular spot, some travellers have noted the increasing costs of amenities like parking and food. Despite this, many visitors still consider the beach itself a highlight. One recent review from a July 2024 visitor described the beach as nothing short of “paradise.”
Trailing close behind Tulum in the rankings is Anse Source D’Argent in the Seychelles, famous for its striking granite boulders and shimmering white sand. This beach scored a sand variation of just 4.3, showcasing its nearly immaculate shores. The Indian Ocean location is a haven for honeymooners and luxury travellers seeking privacy and natural beauty.
In third place was Marmari Beach in Greece, which scored a variation of 6.5. Nestled on the island of Kos, this beach combines soft white sands with gentle breezes and a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere—making it a favourite among those seeking serenity.
Interestingly, Europe dominated the top rankings, with eight of the top ten whitest beaches found within its borders. This includes sun-drenched shores in Italy, Spain, France, and Greece—proving that travellers don’t always have to jet across the world to find bright, beautiful sand.
