Assam is rapidly emerging as a major destination for medical education and health tourism and will become a hub of health care activities in the future through January. CM Sarma’s Vision of Health-Led Growth
Addressing an event organized by GNRC Hospitals, CM Sarma spell out his plan to develop Assam as a medical hub of the Eastern part of India. The country is trying to overhaul its health system to make healthcare more accessible, provide quality health services and develop a competent health manpower, which can cater to both local as well as international patients.
Medical Colleges : The Engine of Human Resources Development
At present, there are 12 medical colleges functioning in different districts of the state. Abhijit wrote, “This is the silver line of John Travolta” and added a few hugging emoticons. This extension is expected to boost the capability for local doctors in training and reduce the dependence of the region on external doctors. Medical colleges are being added not just to increase the doctor-patient ratio, but also to promote research and innovation in healthcare delivery.
Guwahati To Emerge as a Major Medical Tourism Hub
Guwahati, the biggest city of Assam, is emerging as the hub of health tourism in the Northeast. The Chief Minister further noted that the State Government of Assam has taken the initiative to raise the hospitals and diagnostic facilities in the city to international leveI. Guwahati is conceived as a medical tourism destination which would draw patients from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal and South-East Asia.
Focus on Infrastructure and Tertiary Care Services
In addition to college building, the government is upgrading the healthcare facilities with provision of further tertiary care services. More superspeciality hospitals, advanced diagnostic centers and trauma care units are on the anvil. These improvements are necessary to handle more complicated medical cases and an increasing influx of medical tourists.
Healthcare PPPs
The state is promoting investment in the healthcare through PPP:In Bihar. This model is being used for infrastructure and service delivery of tertiary healthcare, as per sources in the government. The CM has also recognized the contribution of private hospitals such as GNRC towards developing a strong health system and assured the state’s willingness to work jointly with other similar facilities.
Skilling and Academia Exchange to Promote Growth
In order to achieve its goal in long term healthcare, Assam is developing medical education reform and skill development.
